Labor and Birth; We provide care during your labor and birth monitoring the health and wellness of mother and baby while also providing suggestions and support to guide you through the process. We are specialized in the area of natural childbirth and the use of water to assist with relaxation. Your midwife can answer questions during pregnancy regarding your options and preparation for your birth as well as make suggestions that will assist you during that time. While two midwives attend homebirths and most hospital births, the second midwife is only called to come for the actual birth itself.

Westside Midwives

Our Services:

We believe that having a baby is a natural but profound life experience. Our role is to support you through this journey with regular assessments, informed choices and education. We are available anytime by phone for urgent concerns or for labour.

Prenatal care is provided at our clinic in Spruce Grove. Family and friends are welcome to attend individual appointments. Alternating with these appointments are 6 longer appointments in the second and third trimester that take place within a group of several women due in the same month. These groups support networking and discussions of healthy eating, exercise and positive thinking. Women themselves have asked that no partners or children are present during the group discussions. Midwives provide the same level of maternity and newborn care as a family doctor, meaning it is a duplication of services to see a physician while under our care and is only permitted in certain circumstances. We will refer you to a physician for concerns unrelated to pregnancy or if complications arise.

We are Registered Midwives who provide complete maternity and newborn services for healthy women and their families planning either a homebirth, a birth center birth or a hospital birth at the Sturgeon General Hospital in St. Albert. For further information regarding the birth centre please go to the following link: http://lucinacentre.ca/

Postpartum care and breastfeeding support is an essential service that we provide. Following a birth at the birth center or hospital, most women and their newborns are comfortable going home after four hours past birth. The midwives do follow-up visits in your home within 12 to 24 hours after the birth and then home visits as needed during the first week. Then our postpartum care continues at our clinic at 1 week, 3 weeks and the final visit is at 6 weeks postpartum.
If we hope to create a non-violent world where respect and kindness replace fear and hatred, we must begin with how we treat each other at the beginning of life.
